THE ENRICHLAYER ALTERNATIVE

EnrichLayer Kept Proxycurl's Cache. Datamagnet Fetches On Request.

EnrichLayer carries the Proxycurl model forward, cache first. Datamagnet takes a different position: every profile fetched live at request time, plus post engagement, ICP search, and signals that model never offered.

Datamagnet vs EnrichLayer: the short answer

EnrichLayer is the Proxycurl-shaped API that outlived Proxycurl's July 2025 shutdown: the same GET endpoint shape, the same credit model, plus emails, phone numbers and job postings that Datamagnet does not offer. The difference is freshness. EnrichLayer checks its cache before fetching, a cached profile under 29 days old costs an extra credit, and only live_fetch=force actually goes to the page — nine credits on top of the base one, so ten for a profile you know is current. Datamagnet fetches live at 1 credit and adds post engagement, ICP search and job-change signals. Choose EnrichLayer for contact data and Proxycurl compatibility, Datamagnet when currency is the requirement.

Our verdict

EnrichLayer is a competent continuation of the Proxycurl model, and for anyone with Proxycurl code still in production it is the cheapest available migration — its docs say existing API keys still work once you point them at the new base URL, and its Python package restores the old call signatures behind one import. It also does things we do not: personal and work emails, phone numbers, job postings, school records, and 300 requests a minute against our 30. What it does not do is make a live fetch the default. The cache is checked first unless you pay to skip it, and skipping it costs nine extra credits. If a profile of unknown age is fine for your use case, EnrichLayer at 1 credit is good value. If it is not, you are paying ten credits for what Datamagnet charges one.

Which one should you pick?

Straight guidance, including the cases where we're the wrong answer.

Choose Datamagnet if

  • The profile has to be current when you read it, without a nine-credit surcharge to guarantee it
  • You want post content and the identities behind engagement — commenters, reactors, reposters
  • You want a Sales Navigator search URL turned into structured results, which EnrichLayer's search endpoints do not take as an input
  • You want job-change and engagement signals pushed to a webhook instead of re-polling profiles on a schedule
  • You would rather pay $39 a month you can stop than sign a 12-month subscription commitment
  • You are rewriting the integration anyway, so a POST body and one field remap costs you a day

Choose EnrichLayer if

  • You need email addresses or phone numbers on the same record — Datamagnet returns neither, at any price
  • You have working Proxycurl code and want it to keep running: EnrichLayer says existing keys still work once the base URL changes, and its Python package restores the old call signatures behind one import
  • You need job-postings data or education-institution records; EnrichLayer has Jobs and School APIs and we have no equivalent
  • You need 300 requests per minute; Datamagnet tops out at 30 on the Scale plan
  • Bulk backfill is the job and a cached profile of any age is acceptable, where EnrichLayer at 1 credit is hard to beat
  • You want credits that sit unused for a year or more — their pay-as-you-go credits lapse only after 18 months of account inactivity, where ours expire 12 months after purchase

EnrichLayer capabilities are summarized from their public documentation and pricing pages, last checked July 2026. Products change — verify against their current offering before you buy.

On EnrichLayer, live is a paid parameter. Here it is the default.

EnrichLayer's person endpoint costs 1 credit, and that headline number is honest as far as it goes. What it buys is a cache lookup first. Their docs are not consistent about which cache mode an account gets by default — the person endpoint reference marks use_cache=if-recent as the default, the data-freshness knowledge base describes a call without cache parameters returning whatever is cached regardless of age, and the cache guide says the dashboard setting decides. What is consistent is the exit: use_cache=if-recent costs an extra credit and still accepts anything under 29 days old, and only live_fetch=force actually goes to the page, at nine extra credits. Datamagnet has no cache parameter to tune, because there is no cache: every person and company call fetches at request time for 1 credit.

  • Cache checked first — 1 credit, and the docs disagree on which cache mode is the account default
  • use_cache=if-recent — +1 credit, and "recent" means under 29 days old
  • live_fetch=force — +9 credits, the only documented way to guarantee a live fetch
10 credits
What a guaranteed-live person profile costs on EnrichLayer — 1 credit base plus the 9-credit live_fetch=force surcharge. Datamagnet charges 1.

EnrichLayer's published plan prices are annual; a monthly billing toggle exists, but its FAQ states monthly and annual are both a 12-month commitment, where Datamagnet's $39 plan can be stopped any month. At EnrichLayer's best pay-as-you-go rate, $0.0216 a credit, a forced-live person profile is 10 credits — about $0.22, against $0.02 at Datamagnet's per-credit floor. Competitor pricing is taken from their public pricing page and was last checked July 2026; list prices change and negotiated rates differ. See Datamagnet pricing for our current plans.

Where each tool genuinely wins

No tool wins everywhere. Here's the honest split.

Where EnrichLayer wins

  • Personal, work and reverse email lookup — Datamagnet does not do email addresses at all
  • Personal and mobile phone lookup, charged per number returned; Datamagnet has no phone data
  • A migration path Proxycurl users can actually take: existing keys keep working against the new base URL, a Python shim restores the old call signatures behind one import, and transferring customers were given a 24-month price freeze
  • A Jobs API for postings and hiring data, plus a School API for education institutions and a Logo API — none has a Datamagnet equivalent
  • 300 requests per minute on paid accounts, bursting to 1,500 over five minutes; Datamagnet caps at 30 on Scale
  • A far larger free trial: 200 credits on a work email against our 10
  • Pay-as-you-go credits that lapse only after 18 months of account inactivity, against 12-month expiry on ours
  • A large standing dataset with boolean AND/OR/NOT search across it — their site claims 245M US and 790M global person records and 150M updates a month, which no request-time API can match on breadth

Where Datamagnet wins

  • A live fetch is the default and costs nothing extra; on EnrichLayer it carries a nine-credit surcharge
  • Post content and engagement stats, which do not appear anywhere in EnrichLayer's API reference
  • Commenters, reactors and reposters returned as structured data, not just counts
  • Sales Navigator search URLs turned into structured results, which EnrichLayer's search endpoints do not take as an input
  • Six signal types: job changes, new posts, and keyword, industry, company and person engagement
  • HMAC-signed webhooks, so records update themselves instead of being re-polled on a schedule
  • Monthly plans from $39 you can cancel any month, against a 12-month subscription commitment
  • Charged only on successful requests, with 10 free credits and no card to start

Datamagnet vs EnrichLayer: FAQ

Enrich Layer is a B2B data API covering people, companies, contacts, jobs and schools. It became the default landing spot for Proxycurl users after Proxycurl shut down on 4 July 2025, following a LinkedIn lawsuit against its operator Nubela filed that January. Enrich Layer describes the two as separate companies whose founders worked together on the handover: it publishes an endpoint mapping guide, says existing Proxycurl keys still work, and gave transferring customers a 24-month price freeze.

Both, depending on what you pay. EnrichLayer's documented default, use_cache=if-present, returns a cached profile regardless of its age, though an account can change that default in its dashboard. Setting use_cache=if-recent costs one extra credit and accepts anything under 29 days old. Only live_fetch=force bypasses the cache, and it adds nine credits, so a guaranteed-current person profile costs ten credits rather than one. Datamagnet has no cache parameter: every call fetches at request time for 1 credit.

Not as API endpoints. EnrichLayer's published API reference covers people, companies, contacts, jobs, schools and search — nothing for post content, comments, reactions or reposts, and no webhooks. It does offer a free Champion Tracker tool that re-enriches a list of past contacts to show where they work now, but that is polling, not a pushed signal. Datamagnet returns post content, stats and the identities of commenters, reactors and reposters, and pushes six signal types to an HMAC-signed webhook.

It is a day of work, not a project. EnrichLayer uses GET requests with query parameters against enrichlayer.com/api/v2; Datamagnet uses POST with a JSON body against api.datamagnet.co/api/v1. You swap the endpoint, move the LinkedIn URL from the query string into the request body, read from the message wrapper, and remap field names once. Our Proxycurl migration guide applies almost verbatim, and 10 free credits cover the test calls.

For cached lookups, often yes: a person or company profile is 1 credit, and its best advertised pay-as-you-go rate is about $0.0216 per credit at $1,000 up front. For live data the comparison inverts, because forcing a fetch adds nine credits — roughly $0.22 for a current profile against $0.02 at Datamagnet's per-credit floor. EnrichLayer subscriptions also carry a 12-month commitment whether billed monthly or annually, with early cancellation charged for the remaining months; Datamagnet's $39 plan stops when you stop paying.

When you need contact data or Proxycurl compatibility. EnrichLayer returns personal and work email addresses and phone numbers, has Jobs and School APIs, and allows 300 requests per minute on paid accounts — Datamagnet does none of those and caps at 30. Its compatibility package also lets existing Proxycurl code run against the new backend unchanged. And if a cached profile of unknown age suits your use case, its 1-credit default is good value.
